Making Your Own Work

[Reaper T-shirt by Reaper Agency]

I once had a teacher (yes a teacher) say to me that 'those who can't act, teach'. I could not disagree with this more.

I currently (alongside acting and filmmaking) teach Film and TV to kids from 5 - 18 at PQA and professional actors at Acting Up. Yes these are jobs to me to pay my rent but they are also so rewarding, make me learn about how other people work and also have helped me grow in confidence and as an actor.

There is honestly no better feeling than having a 6 year old looking up to you with huge amounts of respect for following your dreams and showing them that anything is possible.

I believe as humans it is the most important thing we can do and leave this planet with having done. To teach another person is the greatest gift you can give.

We are always learning as actors and performers and the more you can share the more you get back.

I hope that even when I am where I want to be as an actor and a filmmaker I still have the time to teach others to work and follow their dreams.

My favourite teacher at Bird College was the voice teacher as I had many chats with her about jot doing dance and wanting to act and she was the only one that told me I could.

To inspire and help others is what we should all be doing so let's change that saying to 'Those who can, teach'.

Thank You

The BFI London Film Festival is well and truly under way. The red carpets are out in Leicester Square and there is a new purpose built (and stunning may I add) cinema in Embankment Gardens.

Being an actor and a filmmaker I love this time of year, not only because you get to walk the red and see a film not for public release until the new year, but also because these films inspire me to do what I do, whether I think they are a good film or not.

One film that has massively stood out to me however, has been 'La La Land' directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) and starring the annoyingly hot on screen couple Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Now this post is not a review of the film, but I will quickly add it is FUCKING BRILLIANT. It's not out until 13th of January but I beg you see it. I believe it will win Best Film at the Oscars next year.

Anyway, the film is about following your dreams and the consequences of that. As actors we can give up a lot to follow in the pursuit of our dreams. Myself, I have missed family weddings, turned down huge pay cheques and let down hundreds of friend all for that film job or even that chance at an audition.

But it's ok. We are not living in La La Land we are purely following what our heart and our head wants (dare I say even our blood).

Yes we will always have them times when we are asked what we are doing at the minute and you may feel like you are stuck in a rut. But we are the chance takers in life, the people who won't settle with the system, the people making change and bringing awareness to stories to be told. We are the ones that when offices workers want escape from their lives, they come to us.

So follow your dreams, give it everything you have got, find things that inspire you to keep you on your road and do not feel guilty for missed events and opportunities because you are doing what is right for you.

Oh and also the London Film Festival runs until Sunday so it urge you to find a ticket to something.
